Avalanche Fans Are Witnessing History, Have You Noticed?

The Avalanche joined the NHL as a powerhouse from day one. They moved from Quebec to Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche. This team took the National Hockey League by storm on their way to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup Championship in their inaugural season in Denver.

With a plethora of Hall of Fame players over the decades since that fateful first season including the likes of Peter Forsberg, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Jari Kuri, and Ray Bourque fans have witnessed several records and franchise-defining moments.

You would think that after 3 Stanly Cup championships, there would be little place left in the records books. This is where Nathan Mackinnon comes into play.

Nathan MacKinnon is chasing down two impressive records right now. (March 11th, 2024) Let’s start by taking a look at the first one.

Longest Consecutive Home Game Point Streak To Start A Season

Mackinnon has now played in 32 home games. He has scored at least 1 point or more in each game. In that time he scored 26 goals and 45 assists for 71 points. Currently, the only player who has ever scored in more consecutive home games to start a season was none other than the “great one” himself, Wayne Gretzky.

Highest scoring Season in Avalanche Franchise history

Avalanche head of Hockey Operations, Joe Sakic, currently holds the franchise record for points in a season with 120 in the Inaugural season (1995-1996). Nathan MacKinnon currently has 40 goals and 71 assists for 111 points in 65 games played. With 19 games left in the season, he has a real chance of not only matching that record but surpassing it.

How many points do you think Mackinnon will finish the season with this year? Will this scoring production continue in the playoffs? Put your guesses in the comments.
